Hi, I am Sara Powell (she/her/hers) M.S, C-DBT, LPC therapist with ElevateMind. I graduated from Millersville University in 2019 with my master’s degree in clinical psychology and have been working in the field for about 8 years now. My motivation in becoming a therapist was recognizing how scarce resources were for mental health when I was growing up having depression myself as an adolescent. I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults that are struggling with depression, suicidality, self-harm, other mood disorders, LGBTQ related issues, and chronic pain/autoimmune illness.
My primary therapeutic modalities are Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, structured problem solving, solution focused therapy, and mindfulness-based pain reduction interventions.
On a day-to-day basis I work with clients on reframing negative thought patterns, decreasing reactivity to emotions/stressors, developing healthy coping skills, helping find the balance between acceptance and change, teaching mindfulness, teaching effective problem solving, and teaching pain reduction strategies. I emphasize the importance of collaboration between therapist and client, which looks like having an open dialogue about goals for therapy, skills and interventions, progress, and accountability. My favorite part of therapy sessions is when a client has a “lightbulb” moment…. picture in old time cartoons when the character had an idea, and a lightbulb would pop up over their head. These moments in session are when the client has a realization that really sticks with them or challenges them to progress forward. I am looking forward to helping you find your “lightbulb” moment to move you towards getting unstuck.
